Structural Opening Cut Without Temporary Works

A wall removed before the new steel was on site. The ceiling above moved.

What happened

A ground-floor opening was cut for a new kitchen layout before the supporting steel had been delivered. Temporary props were inadequate and the load above moved overnight.

How it was discovered

Cracks visible the next morning across the ceiling above the new opening. Engineer attended within two hours.

The consequences

Emergency propping, ceiling stabilised, beam installed early, plaster repairs. The crack pattern remained visible at finishes — replastering was needed.

What homeowners can learn

Structural openings have a sequence. Cutting before the support arrives is not 'getting ahead'.
