Manhole Discovered Inside Finished Kitchen

Nobody mentioned the manhole. The kitchen designer placed an island on top of it.

What happened

An existing inspection chamber was tiled over during refurbishment. The kitchen island was installed on top of the tiled cover.

How it was discovered

A blockage three months later. Drain jetting required access. The chamber lid was unreachable.

The consequences

Island removed, chamber exposed, recessed double-sealed cover retrofitted, island modified to allow access. Avoidable with one conversation at design stage.

What homeowners can learn

Drainage layouts have to be visible to kitchen designers. They almost never are.
