How Loft Conversion Inspections Work

When the inspector visits, what they look at, and how to make the visits go smoothly.

Stages

Typically: commencement, structural opening up, structural completion (steels in), insulation before plasterboard, drainage if altered, and final. Stages can be combined on smaller jobs.

What to have ready

Engineer's drawings on site, product datasheets for insulation and fire boards, and the protected stair in a near-final state at final inspection. Inspectors do not enjoy guessing.

If the inspector flags something

Get the comment in writing. Do not rely on a verbal 'we'll be fine' from the builder. The list, dated and on letterhead, is the working document.
