Electrical Certificate Never Issued

The electrician was registered. The paperwork was not sent. Months later, it mattered.

What happened

An extension's electrical work was carried out by a NICEIC-registered contractor. The electrical installation certificate was never submitted to the scheme provider.

How it was discovered

When the homeowner requested a copy two years later for an insurance claim.

The consequences

Re-test and re-certification by the original installer. Six weeks to obtain the new certificate. The insurance claim resolved without it, but only narrowly.

What homeowners can learn

Ask for the certificate number and the scheme provider reference within thirty days of completion. The certificate has to be visible on the scheme's public register.
