Asbestos Found During Strip Out

An expected refurbishment became a notifiable removal in twenty-four hours.

What happened

A 1970s extension was being stripped for replacement when ceiling tiles were identified as containing asbestos.

How it was discovered

The site foreman, sensibly, paused and called for a sample test. Result confirmed asbestos.

The consequences

Licensed removal contractor, site cleared, HSE notification, three weeks of delay, and a meaningful unbudgeted cost.

What homeowners can learn

Older properties carry asbestos risk. A pre-construction asbestos survey is cheaper than the discovery.
